English Education at the LERC
The Language Education and Research Center (LERC) strives to help students at all proficiency levels reach their English language goals. It is primarily responsible for planning and administering the compulsory Fundamental English Program in which all 1st and 2nd-year students are enrolled. In addition, the LERC offers a more intensive educational experience for higher-proficiency students in its Career English Program. Students enrolled in the Career English Program have the option of applying to participate in two job training courses: Overseas Job Training and Domestic Job Training. Acceptance into the programs is competitive. Both courses include experiential learning opportunities as well as internships at a wide range of global-minded businesses.
The LERC also provides a variety of special programs in addition to the courses that comprise the regular curriculum. Three of these programs are designed for students currently enrolled at the university. Elective TOEIC Preparation courses are designed to help students improve their scores on the TOEIC and TOEIC Bridge proficiency tests. English Discussions are stimulating one-off lessons that give students an opportunity to expand their cultural horizons. The bimonthly Coffee Hour provides students with a chance to speak English with teachers and with each other in an informal setting.
Two additional outreach programs are designed for individuals who are not currently enrolled at the university. The summer and winter High School English program provide intensive short-term courses for high school students who are planning to attend the university in the future. Extension Courses are evening English courses for working professionals that focus on improving conversational English ability.
