Research at the LERC is conducted for the specific purpose of improving the quality of education at the center. Unlike many other university research environments in Japan, the LERC actively encourages both full-time and adjunct faculty to conduct research. Collaboration amongst faculty is common, and individualized support is provided to less experienced researchers.
In addition, the LERC provides a publishing forum in the form of a center bulletin called the LERC Journal. Proposals and submissions to this annual publication undergo a rigorous vetting and revision cycle. A number of research initiatives that started as smaller-scale projects featured in the LERC Journal have been subsequently expanded and reanalyized. Some of these have found their way into international publications that boast a wide readership base.
The driving engine behind a number of these projects has been grant funding, provided intra-institutionally as well as externally from the Ministry of Education. Faculty continually strive to secure grant funding that allows exciting new research ideas to be brought to life.
